40% of youth experiencing homelessness in the United States identify as LGBTQ. The most commonly cited reason for this? Family rejection.
This is a statistic many of us have heard regularly over the past few years, but attempting to fully understand the reality of this figure—the individuals and the stories behind the number, and the true impact on the lives of so many young people in our community—can be daunting and overwhelming.
But then we have the opportunity to work closely with the incredible and committed community that surrounds us—brilliant and dedicated advocates and providers, funding partners, government and elected leaders, and scholars—and I have hope that, together, we can end youth homelessness.
It is in that spirit that #TrueColorsDay was created—a day rooted in the belief that all youth should be able to show their true colors without fear of family rejection or becoming homeless.
To end youth homelessness, we must understand the issue in all its complexity, and the ways in which we can all play a role in ending it. In this month’s eNews, in honor of #TrueColorsDay, we are sharing stories and information about the work to end youth homelessness—and in particular, addressing the disproportionate impact on LGBTQ youth and youth of color.
