Alaskan AIDS Assistance Association (Four A’s)

Alaskan AIDS Assistance Association (Four A’s) provides a safe and supportive environment for LGBTQ people and participates actively in local LGBTQ community, working to remove the barriers between LGBTQ communities and full sexual health. This funding will support the HIV prevention efforts of the Four A’s in Southeast Alaska. HIV prevention programs include free rapid HIV testing, condom distribution, a syringe access program, and community outreach that raises awareness of HIV/AIDS and empowers people to lower their individual risks of acquiring or transmitting the virus. While these programs are available to the entire Southeast Alaskan community, there is an emphasis on reaching men who have sex with men (MSM) as a high-risk population for HIV infection.

Identity’s mission is to advance Alaska’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community through advocacy, education and connectivity. Funding will support the planning and development of the first-ever Alaska LGBTQ Statewide Health Needs Assessment. This project is a collaboration of Identity Inc., and the Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER) at the University of Alaska Anchorage working with a statewide coalition of partner organizations and stakeholders. The goal of this project is to build support, grow collaborative efforts and collect data that will help us change policy and practices in order to promote the health, well-being and safety of Alaska’s LGBTQ community.

American Civil Liberties Union of Idaho

The ACLU of Idaho is a non-partisan organization dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of civil liberties and civil rights. Funds will support the ACLU of Idaho’s Activist Training program, which provides education, hands-on experience and materials to teach citizens their rights at the Capitol Building. This training focuses on policy and advocacy issues affecting Idaho’s LGBTQ community with a focus on increasing participation from rural residents to create a larger, and more diverse, net of equality advocates.
Family Services Alliance of Southeast Idaho (FSA)

Project Name: Expanding Outreach Services to LGBTQ Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence

Family Services Alliance of Southeast Idaho (FSA) promotes safe and thriving families and works to end physical, sexual and emotional abuse, and provide victim support. Funding will support developing outreach materials for LGBTQ survivors explaining availability of services; improving the office and shelter environment of FSA to increase a sense of welcoming for LGBTQ individuals; and providing onsite crisis intervention to LGBTQ victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking. The project will expand on current outreach services and increase accessibility of vital advocacy services for victims of intimate partner violence, sexual assault and stalking for the LGBTQ community.
Idaho Coalition Against Sexual & Domestic Violence

The Idaho Coalition Against Sexual & Domestic Violence works to be a leader in the movement to end violence against women and girls, men and boys – across the life span before violence has occurred – because violence is preventable. Funding will support Idaho Coalition’s Rural LGBTQ Youth Leadership Initiative. The Idaho Coalition believes that young people must lead the movement against gender violence and in creating a better Idaho and society and the Rural LGBTQ Youth Leadership Initiative would remove barriers for LGBTQ youth in rural Idaho to participating in youth activism and organizing.

Inland Oasis exists to develop and maintain a community center in which we conduct and support educational, social, and health programming for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and allied communities on the Palouse. Funds will be used for HIV/AIDS-related testing services at Inland Oasis which provides a community center, HIV and Hepatitis C screening, Palouse Pride, Family Thanksgiving, Drag Bingo, and other social and health programming for LGBTQ people and allies in Southeastern Washington and North Central Idaho.
North Idaho AIDS Coalition (NIAC)

Project Name: The Condom Shop

North Idaho AIDS Coalition (NIAC) is dedicated to serving the changing faces of AIDS by providing community prevention, education, free testing, as well as care and advocacy for those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS in North Idaho. Funding will support “The Condom Shop” project, a collaborative effort with the State of Idaho Prevention Program. The Condom Shop will be raising awareness, educating community members, and encouraging safe sex to reduce HIV and STDs in North Idaho. The shop will stock different types and brands of condoms, safe sex materials, education pamphlets, and area resource information, all free of charge and be available to members of NIAC’s Mpowerment group of young MSM men aged 18-27.
PFLAG Moscow

PFLAG Moscow promotes the health and well-being of people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, asexual, agender, or other diverse gender or sexuality identity categories, and their families, friends and allies through: support, education and advocacy. Funding will support this new chapter’s general start-up operating expenses such as purchasing a computer, business cards, designing materials to distribute at meetings and events.
Pocatello High School

Project Name: Gay-Straight Alliance Club Support for 3 Pocatello High Schools

This is a collaborative project for three new gay-straight alliance clubs at the three main high schools in Pocatello, Idaho—Pocatello High School, Highland High School and Century High School. In the last two years, the community has had at least three teen suicides with an identifiable element of LGBT-related harassment, victim-identification, or allegations. While a handful of students at each high school feel comfortable and confident in being out, so many more do not, and even more do not have support at home. School administration recognized that starting GSAs are “unchartered territory” for each of the schools, the advisors, students and administrators, but much needed in helping to address the culture of the schools. Funding will provide a base to get the clubs off the ground so they can work on engaging students and towards sustainability.
Great Falls LGBTQ Community Center

The Great Falls LGBTQ Center is a newly established community resource center. The Center provides educational, advocacy, and social programs, as well as mental health services, for the LGBTQ and ally communities of Great Falls and the rural and reservation areas of Central and Eastern Montana. The Center is currently staffed by volunteers and has been previously funded entirely by in-kind donations. Funding will support the building organizational capacity, programming, outreach, and operational costs needed to achieve sustainability and longevity.
Montana Human Rights Network in collaboration with Forward Montana Foundation & Montana Women Vote

Project Name: Montana LGBTQ Executive Action Project
Montana Human Rights Network (MHRN), Forward Montana Foundation (FMF), and Montana Women Vote (MWV) are collaborating to pursue LGBTQ policies through administrative actions in 2016. Funding will support research, community building, developing processes and programs to gather input and empower individuals within affected communities to advocate for these reforms.
National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) Missoula

Project Name: Queer Youth Support and Empowerment Programs

National Coalition Building Institute’s (NCBI) Queer Youth Support and Empowerment Programs empower LGBTQ and allied youth as role models and change agents in schools and communities. NCBI aims to empower LGBTQ youth through a weekly confidential support group, “Youth Forward”. Funding will support NCBI’s work in developing Youth Forward groups in Billings and Helena, train LGBTQ and allied youth as leaders to facilitate violence prevention and anti-bullying/prejudice reduction workshops, and provide LGBTQ 101 trainings for educators, law enforcement, and advocacy groups. NCBI Missoula also serve as Montana’s GSA Network, providing support and technical assistance to new and existing GSAs across the state and are a trusted resource for policy work focused on youth such as non-discrimination policies in schools.
Flathead Reservation Human Rights Coalition (FRHRC)

Flathead Reservation Human Rights Coalition promotes the cause of human rights in the Flathead Reservation community, affirming rights of men, women, and children. FRHRC provides educational events to Native American youth on the Flathead Reservation on LGBTQ issues including bullying, two spirit issues in the Native American community, racism, harm reduction, and substance abuse. Funds will support a joint community organizing training with the youth and NCBI Missoula and help build a stronger GSA network in all of the schools in the surrounding area. FRHRC also partners with advocacy organizations such as Gender Expansion Project, and Montana Coalition Against Domestic & Sexual Violence to present on intersectional issues impacting Native American youth.
Butte AIDS Support Services (BASS)

Butte AIDS Support Services (BASS) is an all-volunteer run social service organization, which has been in existence since 1984. The assistance program provides food cards, gas cards, medicine co-pays, Medicare Part D deductibles, nutritional supplements and emergency assistance. Many people depend on BASS for their basic needs, and funding will allow BASS to continue to provide these critical services. Funding will provide essential financial support for the BASS assistance program.
Bradley Angle

Project Name: LGBTQ Program for Survivors

Bradley Angle serves all people affected by domestic violence, providing support for safety, education, empowerment, healing, and hope. This grant will seed a special fund to build capacity in their LGBTQ program to create a part-time LGBTQ advocate position. As the only Portland provider of services to survivors of domestic violence who identify as LGBTQ, Bradley Angle is called upon to provide a wide range of supportive services, as well as outreach and education to other organizations about the prevalence of domestic violence in LGBTQ intimate relationships who are trying to build their capacity in this area.
Center for Intercultural Organizing

Project Name: Resilient Connections

Center for Intercultural Organizing leads community-based efforts to protect and expand immigrant and refugee rights through education, civic engagement, policy advocacy, community mobilization, and intergenerational leadership development. CIO is building internal capacity to ensure their organizational structure emphasizes the needs of their LGBTQ members and that they are a key partner for LGBTQ justice. CIO will use funds to continue to grow their group Resilient Connections, a group formed by and for LGBTQ immigrants, refugees, and people of color in the Portland Tri-County area that provides individual support and develops ways to advocate for institutional and systemic change on the issues that impact their lives.
HIV Alliance

Project Name: Expanding Prevention Services to Rural Counties in Oregon

HIV Alliance provides care coordination to people living with HIV/AIDS in eleven counties in Oregon. Lack of HIV prevention services particularly impacts rural counties, where individuals experience discrimination not only because they are gay or because they have HIV, but also because they live in an area where access to culturally appropriate health services/providers is non-existent or diminishing. Funding will support outreach and testing to gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) in Lane, Douglas, Josephine, and Curry Counties in Oregon.
Immigration Counseling Services

Project Name: Legal Services for LGBQ+ Immigrants & Refugees

Immigration Counseling Services (ICS) works to eliminate barriers to justice by providing low-cost legal services and free informational forums for immigrants in Oregon and SW Washington. In recent years, ICS has seen an increased need for legal services for LGBTQ refugees who have been victims of crime or persecution. Funds will be used to subsidize some or all of the legal services and coordination fees for LGBTQ+ immigrants who cannot afford to pay for legal representation, support assistance to LGBTQ+ survivors of trafficking and for the development of materials designed to reach LGBTQ+ immigrants who have not yet accessed legal services.
The Living Room

The Living Room creates safe spaces through community education and collaborations using youth/adult partnership model, they offer accessible programming and resources that encourage the personal growth and leadership skills of LGBTQ youth and their allies. This year The Living Room has seen a dramatic increase in the number of youth attending the weekly drop in. Funds will support the weekly drop in, Gay Straight Alliance/Queer Straight Alliance groups, community education, and suicide intervention training.
Lotus Rising Project

Lotus Rising Project is a youth-initiated, compassion-based service organization that embraces diversity and creates community and social change through respect, education, and responsible action. Lotus Rising Project has been serving LBGTQ youth and adults in Southern Oregon since 2008. Funding will support the expansion of its flagship program, Not Straight Not Sure (NSNS), a youth support and social group, by building its capacity to be inclusive of transgender individuals. Lotus Rising Project will be expanding their services to transgender youth and adults, including addressing clothing and binder needs, organizational cultural competency, support group expansion into other counties, and one-on-one advocacy.
Oregon Attorney General’s Sexual Assault Task Force

Project Name: Improving Medical-Forensic Care for Transgender Sexual Assault Patients through Expanding Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Training

This project builds on the Task Force’s efforts to improve the medical-forensic-care to transgender sexual assault patients. Through training and technical assistance, the project will increase access to competent healthcare following a sexual assault for trans* identified people and equip Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) with the language and skills necessary to meaningfully provide medical-forensic care to trans* patients. Funding will support translating their current curriculum on the “Medical-Forensic Care for Transgender Patients” into a nursing Reference Guide and a Train-the-Trainer Toolkit; deliver two – 1 ½ day trainings in Oregon and Washington; and provide one webinar to introduce the materials nationally with FORGE, a national organization that focuses on ending sexual assault for transgender people.
PFLAG Oregon Central Coast (OCC)

Project Name: Upstander, Not Bystander: Community Bully Prevention Project

PFLAG Oregon Central Coast’s (OCC) main focus is to make area schools and communities safer for LGBTQ youth in rural environments, especially where LGBTQ people are often isolated. Funding will support PFLAG OCC community coalition building in order to be proactive in preventing bullying against all vulnerable students in their community. PFLAG OCC will be training three schools to adopt bully prevention programs, presenting at two Youth Leadership Academies, and an LGBTQ-related conference.
PFLAG Portland Black Chapter

Project Name: Peer Educational Leadership Cohort

PFLAG Portland Black Chapter (PBC) promotes the health and well-being of Black LGBTQ people, their families, and friends through support, education, organizing, and advocacy. PBC is the first African American chapter of PFLAG in the nation and was formed to address culturally specific work in the Black community around LGBTQ equality in Portland and communities beyond. Funding will support PBC expansion of its current programming serving LGBTQIA+ youth of color in Portland metro. This project works to empower the most vulnerable and marginalized youth through a peer educational leadership cohort that includes a built-in leadership pipeline for youth who continue the program.
SAGE Metro Portland, a program of Friendly House, Inc.

SAGE Metro Portland is the only program in the state of Oregon serving older LGBT adults. By providing advocacy, care coordination, and civic engagement for LGBT older adults, a population that is often marginalized by mainstream senior centers and providers, SAGE connects this population to culturally appropriate resources and social, recreational, and fitness opportunities that are free from discrimination. Funding will support SAGE Metro’s programs and training of social services providers, government agencies, in-home care workers, business community, and nursing and social work students on working with the LGBT elders/seniors utilizing a nationally-recognized curriculum that affirms the lives of LGBT older adults.
TeachOUT

TeachOUT creates anti-oppressive and culturally sustaining classrooms and communities, and supports opportunities for engaging students and educators in putting forward thoughtful alternative visions of teaching and teaching practices, of assessment and accountability, and of schools and schooling. Funding will support the TeachOUT series of annual anti-oppressive teacher education outreach events, forums, and activities. This series is linked to regional middle and high school Gay Straight Alliance and Queer Alliance clubs through the Queer Youth Leadership Summit, as well as statewide educational leaders and national education policy and research.
TransActive Gender Center

TransActive Gender Center provides a holistic range of services and expertise to empower transgender and gender diverse children, youth, and their families in living healthy lives, free of discrimination. TransActive serves more than 430 family units in the Portland Metro area, in addition to influencing policy changes at the local, county, and state level. Funding will support the expansion of current services as TransActive is experiencing unprecedented growth in the number of families needing services and additional increase in demand for educational workshops, professional training, and transgender rights advocacy.
API Chaya

Project Name: Queer Network Program

API Chaya supports Asian, South Asian, and Pacific Islander survivors and families impacted by domestic violence and sexual assault, as well as human trafficking survivors from all communities. API Chaya’s Queer Network Program engages the Asian, South Asian and Pacific Islander lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer and questioning community in the greater Seattle area to address and prevent intimate partner violence. The program builds skills among allies and community members, raises the visibility of the community and concerns, and supports survivors of violence as well as their friends and family. Funding will support program staff and expenses and will help enable API Chaya to engage 600-800 people through the Queer Network Program in 2016.
Blue Mountain Heart to Heart

Blue Mountain Heart to Heart (BMH2H) will provide outreach education and HIV prevention to at-risk, vulnerable, and underserved populations. Outreach work will focus on people in tribal communities and Latino men who have sex with men (MSM) who are hard to reach through traditional government organizations. Funding will help expand current service areas to Lewiston and Clarkston and begin promoting case management services in order to link people to care.
Cardea Services

Project Name: Supporting Transgender Youth and Adults through Clinical Systems Improvements

Cardea works to improve organizations’ abilities to deliver accessible, high quality, culturally proficient, and compassionate services to their clients. Funding will support the following: 1) design a research-based, theory-driven organizational assessment tool to identify strengths and opportunities in primary care sites to develop/enhance the provision of culturally and clinically proficient care to transgender and gender-nonconforming youth; 2) pilot the tool at Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic in Seattle (a community clinic of Seattle Children’s Hospital); 3) develop recommendations for clinical systems improvements, including policies, protocols, and professional development; and 4) generate a case study on the process for dissemination to health centers in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Montana, and Washington.
Caring and Aging with Pride

Project Name: At-risk and Underserved: LGBTQ Older Adults in Seattle/King County

Caring and Aging with Pride over Time, is the first ever on-going national project designed to better understand the health and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) adults 50 years of age and older. The report prepared by Aging with Pride, At-Risk and Underserved: LGBTQ Older Adults in Seattle/King County, identifies LGBTQ older adults as a growing population facing significant social and health disparities. The goal of this report is to provide information that will aid in developing effective ways to better address the aging needs of culturally diverse LGBTQ older adults and their families in Seattle/King County. This report is the first and is well positioned to be a landmark publication in Seattle’s history of serving LGBTQ older adults, their families, and caregivers. Funds will support printing and disseminating the report to providers, caregivers, and policymakers.
Cedar Rivers Clinic – Tacoma

Cedar Rivers Clinic works to achieve reproductive freedom. They provide abortion and reproductive health services and information, so women may determine their own destinies. In addition, the organization is currently in the process of revising its mission to have gender inclusive language and to reflect its long-time commitment to promoting the freedom and self-determination of people of all gender identities. Funding will support medical services through their LGBTQ Wellness Services program which offers patients quality health care at our Tacoma clinic by providing access in a safe, culturally responsive, and compassionate environment. Currently, the largest service segment for their program is transgender care.
Center for Children and Youth Justice

In 2013, the eQuality Project at the Center for Children & Youth Justice (CCYJ) began the first comprehensive research effort on the experiences of Washington’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth in the child welfare (CW) and juvenile justice (JJ) systems. Since that time, eQuality has gathered first-hand accounts from LGBTQ system alumni, collected the observations of system professionals and community-based service providers about their experiences working with LGBTQ youth, and conducted extensive reviews of existing research, laws, policies, and practices relevant to system-involved LGBTQ youth. This effort culminated the report, Listening to Their Voices. Funding will support the next phase of the project the development and piloting in King County the Protocol for Safe and Affirming Care (PSAC). PSAC includes a detailed guide for youth-serving professionals in both systems to better identify, engage, and serve LGBTQ youth and a training curriculum that will enable them to do so; a plan for collecting meaningful data on the needs, experiences, and outcomes of LGBTQ system-involved youth; and identify the law and policy changes necessary to improve the lives of LGBTQ system-involved youth.
Children Home’s Society of Washington – Vancouver

Children’s Home Society of Washington provides children with strong families, loving stable homes, and their best chance for happiness and success. The Triple Point program provides the only LGBTQ specific counseling, safe space, social skill building, and life skills training for middle and high school aged youth in Clark, Cowlitz, and Skamania counties. Funds will be used to support and expand their programs.

Communities in Schools of Federal Way and Valley Cities Counseling plan to raise awareness for LGBTQ youth and their allies within Federal Way schools including: Saghalie, Illahee, Totem, and Kilo middle schools. Funding will support a broad strategy of building an alliance between four schools so that the LGBTQ students do not feel isolated and know that they are supported in their quest to be themselves. School Outreach Coordinators and counselors from Valley Cities will develop four GSA after-school clubs to provide a safe place for LGBTQ and allied youth to meet and to build a community of support for each other.

Elizabeth Gregory Home (EGH) provides homeless women with transitional housing, a drop-in day center with a wide range of essential services, and individual care management. EGH is inclusive of all LGBTQ women. They have developed policies and programs to support transgender women and others who identify as LGBTQ who may be experiencing discrimination. This grant will support their efforts to further expand this work by conducting research, crafting policies and procedures, developing internal and external trainings, and serving as community advocates for inclusive, needs-sensitive programs and services at-risk and homeless transgender MTF, but also FTM clients. Elizabeth Gregory Home strives to serve as a model for other homeless service providers as to how to integrate sensitive, respectful practices that address the needs of homeless and at-risk transgender women and men throughout the Puget Sound region.

Gender Diversity increases the awareness and understanding of the wide range of gender variations in children, adolescents, and adults by providing family support, building community, increasing community awareness, and improving the well-being for people of all gender identities and expressions. Gender Diversity has provided crucial support to over 350 families with transgender children within Puget Sound. Families who access these direct resources are often profoundly, positively impacted. Yet, they have many more families who have reached out to them who don’t have the ability to access these in-person resources. To meet the needs of these families, Gender Diversity is launching a new virtual family support program utilizing a web/video platform. Funds will support the design, development, and launch of the video support project. The project is being developed in partnership with a newly established trans-led, trans-driven business, Trans Tech Social Enterprises.

GJL will place a special emphasis on eliminating transgender health insurance exclusions in all public and private forms of healthcare.

Janus Youth Programs provides community-based services that enhance the quality of life of children, youth, and families by working in partnership with others to create safe and healthy communities. Funding will support The Perch, a daytime drop-in center assisting homeless youth ages 15-24 in Clark County, Washington. Beyond providing a safe space where youth can find refuge from the streets, youth coming into The Perch have access to the most fundamental level of support to meet their basic needs including meals, clothing, showers, and laundry. Most importantly, The Perch affords youth an environment of respect where they have immediate access to caring staff who seek to build respectful relationships that will help youth prepare for exiting street life. Once a youth is ready to leave the streets, Perch staff work to connect them with transportation, legal identification, health care, mental health and addiction services, education, employment, shelter, and housing resources.

Northwest Youth Services (NYS) collaborates with at-risk, runaway, and homeless youth to foster self-reliance. Funding will support the Street Outreach Program (SOP), which advances access to services for homeless, at-risk, and runaway youth in Whatcom County; create a youth board to address emerging and critical issues that LGBTQ youth face; and to support transgender youth, who remain one of the most invisible and vulnerable populations of homeless youth. SOP provides LGBTQ-specific support and basic supplies to those youth living on the streets and focus on harm and risk reduction, safety planning, and better connecting youth with their community, peers, and family to promote equality and reduce long-standing barriers to services.

Odyssey’s Homeless Youth Prevention Training Program will reach 750 Children’s Administration staff, foster parents, and agencies that contract with Children’s Administration. This program helps remedy LGBTQ youth invisibility in out-of-home care, prevents abuse, and provides the competency needed to improve care for LGBTQ youth, which will prevent and reduce youth homelessness in Washington.

Peace for the Streets by Kids from the Streets (PSKS) provides support and services to Seattle area homeless youth and young adults. Half of these interns work as Queer Youth Community Organizers (QYCO), organizing and advocating on behalf of the overrepresented homeless queer youth population. This project works to eliminate barriers so that all youth and young adults can get the support and encouragement needed to successfully leave life on the streets.

Pizza Klatch offers weekly lunchtime support groups for LGBTQQIA and ally students in Thurston County, Washington. Pizza Klatch provides free pizza, two trained facilitators for each group, and a convenient and safe forum for discussion and education. Over the past seven years, Pizza Klatch has grown from one youth support group to sixteen groups in nine Thurston County schools, serving over 240 LGBTQ students and allies weekly. Funding will support Pizza Klatch expansion outside of Thurston County and into surrounding rural areas including Aberdeen, Shelton, Puyallup, and Chehalis as well as inner-city areas of Tacoma.

Additionally, RC is the home base for 11 partner groups and acts as a referral partner for many more. In the last five months, there have been more than 1,200 in person visits. Rainbow Center is the primary referral agency and resource center for Pierce County and several surrounding counties. Funding will be used for general operating support.

LGBTQ Host Family Program is an innovative emergency housing option that has been developed by RHFY. The Host Family Program addresses the housing needs of homeless youth ages 14-24 by connecting them with caring adults from their community who are willing to provide safe housing and support. RHFY is also in the process of writing legislation for the January 2016 session to allow this option to be approved state-wide.

Art AIDS America is an exhibition produced by Tacoma Art Museum that will tour nationally. Funding will support education and outreach programs for the exhibition Art AIDS America on view in Tacoma from October 2015-January 2016. This exhibition will be the largest and most comprehensive AIDS exhibition to date, opening in the 35th year of the pandemic. While many exhibitions have introduced the subject, Art AIDS America will recast AIDS as a determining factor in American history, repositioning AIDS in its rightful place as an active force at the intersection of art, sexuality, race, ethnicity, class, civil liberties, and politics—the single most charged political topic of the last several decades.

Funding will support the ongoing production, recording, editing, and marketing of the only locally produced weekly LGBT issues radio program in the Inland Northwest.
