The Portland PFLAG Black Chapter has united with the Urban League of Portland to develop a groundbreaking report that will highlight key issue areas affecting Black LGBTQ Oregonians.
“Black gay and transgender folks are among the most vulnerable in our society, particularly, we experience stark social, economic, and health disparities compared to the general population and our straight black counterparts,” says Khalil Edwards, Portland PFLAG Black Chapter President.
“These issues must be addressed as well as the structural barriers that prevent the well-being of all Americans.”
Khalil believes this will be an incredibly important document due to the lack of present research on this topic in Oregon.
“[This report will be] the first piece of information gathering of its kind in Oregon…[and will be] a vital resource in continuing to highlight the experiences, needs, and leadership of LGBTQ people of color in Oregon”.
There is little information nationally on Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer people and their primary concerns. Portland PFLAG Black Chapter and the Urban League see this as a huge disparity in the research that is currently present.
Pride Foundation is grateful to Portland PFLAG Black Chapter, a 2011 grantee, for their vital work for a more equal and just tomorrow. We know that elevating essential voices within our movement is imperative and necessary for the advancement of equality for everyone.
