Chik-Fil-A’s CEO, Dan Cathy, very recently condemned the freedom to marry for committed and loving same sex couples. Clearly, his values are not Pride Foundation’s values.
Pride Foundation envisions a world that honors diversity, fosters mutual respect, and celebrates complete equality. We aren’t the only ones who believe in celebrating full equality. Our friends over at Hamburger Mary’s in Portland do too; that’s why they invented a deliciously “hate-free” chicken sandwich to tantalize your taste buds.
Hamburger Mary’s “hate-free” southern-style chicken sandwich starts with a fresh chicken breast, marinated and battered with Mary’s secret recipe flour and spice mixture. It’s then deep-fried and served with herb mayo and dill pickles on a bakery fresh bun (from Portland’s Alessio’s Bakery). Is your mouth watering yet? I know mine is!
At Hamburger Mary’s locations across the country, a portion of the sale of the chicken sandwich will be donated to nonprofit groups. The Portland location will make its donation to Pride Foundation’s scholarship fund in Oregon.
“Mary’s is excited to partner with Pride Foundation and to support the work they do for Oregon students and local organizations working for LGBTQ equality,” says Emily Quick, owner of Portland’s Hamburger Mary’s.
Mary’s is hoping that the August burger-of-the-month will bring a positive spin to the controversy over Cathy’s comments, and let people know that a “hate-free” chicken sandwich option is out there.
Pride Foundation invites you to come out and support Hamburger Mary’s in Portland throughout the month of August! Also, on August 20, we will be there handing out Pride Foundation swag and eating for equality with our donors, volunteers, scholars, and grantees. We hope you can join us on August 20 from 5pm-8pm at Hamburger Mary’s Portland located at 19 NW 5th Avenue. If you’re unable to join us, be sure to eat there and order the “hate-free” chicken sandwich during the month of August to benefit Pride Foundation in Oregon!
