Washington Marriage Equality Update – October 30

From the Desk of Kris Hermanns

On Saturday, my partner Merri and I dressed in our rain gear and knocked on doors in West Seattle to Get Out The Vote—joining hundreds of energized volunteers in canvassing and phone banking. On Saturday alone, Washington United for Marriage estimates volunteers had over 53,000 conversations across Washington about Approving Referendum 74.

I had a chance to talk to many people who appreciated the reminder to vote and shared their pride in Washington’s chance to make history—many of the people I spoke with are also talking to their friends and family about Approving Referendum 74.

WHAT’S HAPPENING

Phone Banks and Door Bells

With only seven days left, volunteers are still needed to canvass and phone bank every day. With our opponents’ fear-mongering attack ads in full swing, the polls are tightening and we need your help to Get Out The Vote. Every vote matters in this campaign—every one. Sign up to volunteer today or visit the event calendar to find a volunteer opportunity near you.

Faith Ballot Walk in Seattle

On Sunday, November 4 at 1:30 PM, join people of faith for a final walk of support for the freedom to marry and Approving Referendum 74. The walk begins at Central Lutheran Church at 1710 11th Avenue to the ballot box at the King County Administration Building at 500 4th Avenue. Be sure to bring your completed ballot, signs of support, and your community’s faith banners. Questions? Contact Aubrey Thonvold at aubrey@washingtonunited.org or 206.778.0924.

Opponents New Attack Ads

A new ad launched Monday by Preserve Marriage Washington entitled “Schools” tells a story that is not only filled with recycled material and arguments from prior campaigns, it’s full of lies and misleading statements. Zach Silk, the campaign manager for Washington United for Marriage lambasted opponent’s latest TV ad as “dead wrong.” Read more.

While children learn many things at school, we know that values are taught at home. The value of treating others fairly—without judgment—as you would want to be treated, is a lesson that comes from home, not school. Allowing same-sex couples to marry doesn’t change that. Washington United for Marriage has launched a new TV ad in response to address our opponents’ baseless attack.

WHAT’S COMING UP

Election Day!

Don’t forget to vote, Approve Referendum 74, and remind your friends, family, and neighbors to do the same—every vote will count. We are the brink of making history.

If you have not yet received your ballot contact your county election office immediately.

Yard Signs

It’s not too late to get your yard sign and show your support! Contact your closest Action Center to pick up your sign today. (Don’t forget to send us photos of you and your friends and family with your Approve 74 swag to communications@pridefoundation.org for our Facebook photo album.)

HOW TO GIVE

As the clock ticks and every second and every vote counts, the campaign needs to raise another $100,000 before the October 31 deadline. Reaching this final goal will allow Washington United for Marriage to execute our aggressive sprint-to-the-finish strategy and to ensure our message of love and fairness continues to be heard on television, online, on radio, and in person. Please consider a first or an additional gift to Washington United for Marriage. We’re almost there—thank you!

With Pride and Optimism,

Kris Hermanns

Executive Director
