James holds an undergraduate degree in political science. His professional background includes many years of service on a Tribal Council, with multiple terms beginning in the mid-2000s and most recently returning to service in 2023. He has also served in a leadership role on the council for several years, representing multiple districts.
James has contributed his expertise to numerous nonprofit, state, and tribal policy boards, including leadership and financial oversight roles. An enrolled member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Indian Reservation, he lives in Montana on his family’s ranch. He has one son and three grandchildren. His connection to this work is rooted in a deep dedication to community service and advocacy for diverse communities, aligning with efforts to support LGBTQ+ people and advance equity.
