I’m writing you today with a message about joy and hope.
It might not be the message you want to hear right now, or the message you are ready to hear, but—if you’re like me—it may be the message you need.
This past year was rough—there have been things we’ve all needed to do to keep our families and loved ones safe. Things we’ve all had to face as we work to repair our fractured communities and country. Things we’ve all had to give up because we’ve had to make difficult decisions.
And yet, I remain hopeful. I’m hopeful because there are community organizations here in Alaska and across the Northwest like Pride Foundation that have struggled through all these things and are here, stronger than ever before, committed to spreading healing and hope in our community.
I have joy because all of us at Pride Foundation have used this time of uncertainty and strife to renew our commitment to fighting for every person to feel safe and supported in being who they are, where they are.
Please make no mistake, Pride Foundation too has faced difficult decisions, but I’m so proud to be a part of this work to continue showing up. We didn’t step back and focus inward—we stepped up. Pride Foundation gave more in Crisis Community Care Fund grants, Community Grants, and Scholarships than ever before. Grants and critical operating funds to places like Choosing Our Roots, Four A’s, Covenant House Alaska, Tundra Women’s Coalition, Kachemak Bay Family Planning Clinic, YWCA Alaska, Native Movement, AWARE and Identity, Inc.
Together, we are all doing the critical work our community needs right now. It’s because of this—because of the shared work that you help make possible—that I’ve never felt more joy.
